Chasing Blossoms: A Family Photo Adventure

Spring in Littleton, Colorado is an absolutely magical time. The air is crisp, the sun is shining, and the most breathtaking spectacle unfolds: the cherry blossoms bloom. As a family photographer, I couldn't resist the opportunity to capture this fleeting beauty with my own daughter as the star of the show.

I wasn't exactly sure what would be the best spot so with a vision of pastel pink overalls and a backdrop of delicate blossoms, I set out on a location scouting mission with my little ones in tow. I had in mind various locations where I had driven by those blooming pink trees and they caught my eye.

Our first stop was a hidden gem – a creekside haven with a picturesque lake and a charming fountain at its heart. We parked at a nearby building and walked to the spot where cherry blossom trees lined the trail, creating a breathtaking canopy of pink. We even spotted a curious turtle basking in the sun, adding an unexpected touch of the wild to our adventure. He was such a pleasant surprise and we just had to stop to take a look -- and a photo!

My daughter, dressed in her adorable overalls, was mesmerized by the surroundings. It truly looked like something straight out of a fairytale. Her brother, eager to join the fun, insisted on being included in some of the photos. We captured some truly magical moments amidst the blossoms, but our adventurous spirits yearned to explore further, so off we went.

Next, we ventured to a local park, drawn by a vibrant row of pink trees along the roadside. Here, I focused on the details – the delicate strands of my daughter's ponytail, her tiny hands gently cradling a fallen blossom. She walked with such confidence under the blossoming branches, my heart swelling with pride. This little girl, my strong, brave girl, was exploring the world with a joyful spirit. The row of trees lended a facade to the photos as if we were in a pink forest, surrounded on every side by the sweet blossoms.

After a long day of shooting, we arrived at our last destination – a park with a wide-open field and a single cherry blossom tree nestled between two white-flowering trees. A charming wooden fence stood in frontof them, the perfect frame for my daughter's playful antics. Of course, my adventurous little one couldn't resist climbing the fence, and I was there to capture the moment, her joyful face framed by the delicate blossoms. She climbed, hung, focused, and giggled. This was a milestone session for us because her birthday was coming up soon. It was especially beautiful to me to see this little human so full of strength and life. It seemed like weeks ago when she was laying on my shoulder, unable to support her own weight and now here she was, as natural a climber as a monkey.

This last location stole my heart. The simplicity of the scene, the vibrant colors, and the playful energy of my daughter – it was pure magic. As spring 2025 approaches, I plan to offer "Blossom Sessions" at this enchanting location, inviting other families to experience the joy of capturing these fleeting moments under the blooming trees.

This photo adventure was more than just a photoshoot; it was a cherished family memory to celebrate my little girl turning two. We explored new places, discovered hidden gems, and created lasting memories with one another. And as a photographer, I gained a deeper appreciation for the beauty of my surroundings and the importance of capturing these precious moments in time.

Here are some tips for planning your own "Blossom Photosession" in Littleton, Colorado:

  • Timing is everything: I help all my clients with location, which can be especially tricky in Colorado where it is 70 degrees one day and 40 the next. Cherry blossoms typically bloom in late April or early May in Littleton. Keep an eye on local weather forecasts and social media for updates on the peak bloom period.
  • Location scouting is key: If you're not working with a professional photographer then you will likely have quite a bit of location scouting to do on your own. It's usually best to explore different parks and neighborhoods to find the most picturesque spot to bring your vision to life. Consider factors like accessibility, parking, walking distance, crowding, and the overall ambiance.
  • Embrace the unexpected: Be prepared for anything! The weather can be unpredictable, and children may have their own ideas about what they want to do. Go with the flow and embrace the genuine spontaneity. That is what will really bring your photos to life. We may all appreciate the standard "stand-and-smile" but the relationship and fun you share with your loved ones will truly bring those moments to life, as memories.
  • Capture the details: Don't forget to capture the little things – the delicate petals, the playful expressions, the way the sunlight filters through the leaves. I especially love getting detail shots of the littlest ones. Tiny hands, toes, curls, and wide open eyes are some of my favorites.
  • Most importantly, have fun! Relax, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and cherish these precious moments with your loved ones. Remember, you want to look at your beautiful photos and remember a tender-loving joy, not stiff orders and stress.

DIYing your own photoshoot, can be so stressful and time-consuming. I invite you to join me on this enchanting journey next spring and let me sort out the details for you. No need to worry about timing, location, posing, or missing out on these special moments. Let's capture the beauty of the blossoms and create lasting memories for you & your family.
